Officer finds lost wallet belongs to old army mate

A police officer in Weihai, Shandong province, picked up a lost wallet on a train, only to discover that it belonged to an old friend.

Officer Wang Mingjun found the brown wallet on Jan 16 on a lower berth of the train, which had just arrived from Weihai to Hankou, Hubei province.

The wallet contained some cash, five banks cards and an ID. The photo on the ID looked familiar to Wang and he soon recalled the face as an old army buddy, surnamed Wu, whom he had not seen in years.

Wang managed to catch up with Wu just as he was exiting from the train station. In addition to being delighted to see an old friend, Wu was relieved to have his wallet returned to him, especially since he had 400,000 yuan ($60,680) in his accounts, which he had borrowed to buy an apartment.

Lottery winner adjusts sum to avoid shocking mother

A resident of Jinhua, Zhejiang province, who recently scooped a 70 million yuan ($10.62 million) lottery jackpot, told his mother he won 3 million yuan, because he was worried that the true amount would come as a staggering shock to her.

On Jan 12, Xiao Ming, who is in his early 30s, spent 24 yuan on a lottery. When he woke up the following morning, he discovered he had won the largest jackpot ever in the provincial lottery. When he told the news to his mother, however, he adjusted the amount because she has a heart condition and he did not want to give her a heart attack.

Xiao, who has been randomly playing the lottery over the past 11 years, received 56 million yuan after tax. He plans to invest his windfall and build a charitable primary school in his mother's name.
